Criteria for Associate Membership

CRITERIA FOR ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP OF THE NSWIPP BY EXTERNAL APPLICANTS

 

(ii)         Associate Membership

The NSW Institute of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy requires that the following criteria be met by a person being considered for Associate Membership.

(a)        Membership, or eligibility for membership, of his/her appropriate professional body.  For psychiatrists membership of The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists; for Social Workers membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers; and for psychologists membership of the clinical division of the Australian Psychological Society.

(b)        Ten years’ full-time clinical experience as deemed appropriate by the Membership Advisory Board and the Executive Committee.

(c)        Personal therapy experience.  It is required that the applicant should have been involved in his/her own individual psychoanalytic psychotherapy or psychoanalysis, with an approved therapist, for a minimum of three hundred hours.  This should include sessions at least twice weekly over a period of at least three years.

(d)        Psychotherapy Supervision.  The applicant will need to give evidence of supervision of his/her psychotherapy by an approved supervisor in:

weekly small group supervision for a minimum of eighty sessions,

weekly individual supervision for a minimum of forty sessions, provided that the applicant has attended a minimum of one hundred and twenty sessions of supervision, the proportion of individual and group supervision may be varied.  Supervisors’ reports should be called for.

(e)        Psychotherapy experience.  The applicant will be required to give evidence that he/she has treated patients by psychoanalytic psychotherapy.  The minimum requirements are one patient for two hundred hours and two years, and a second patient for one hundred hours and one year.

(f)            Supply the names of three sponsors, all of whom are to be full members of the NSW Institute of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy.  Each sponsor will be required to vouch for the applicant’s suitability for Associate Membership to the Membership Advisory Board.  At the discretion of the Membership Advisory Board, further references may be required.

(g)        Evidence of a didactic training deemed satisfactory by the Membership Advisory Board, such as that set down by the Training Advisory Boards.

(h)        The Membership Advisory Board will interview the applicant and take whatever other necessary steps to establish the applicant's suitability for Associate Membership.

(i)         The prospective Associate Member will then be invited to join the Guest List for a period of not less than one year and not more than two years, and will be required to present a case of his/her own satisfactorily to the membership before final recommendation by the Membership Advisory Board.

(j)             If the applicant is not accepted for Associate Membership, the reason for this will be given on request to the Membership Advisory Board.

(k)           In accordance with the Institute’s Articles of Association, Associate Members may not hold office or have voting rights in the Institute.  Nor may they supervise Institute trainees, chair or be members of Advisory Boards.  They may attend meetings, have notice of meetings, and may, by invitation of the Committee, join subcommittees of the Institute.  They are also expected to abide by the NSWIPP Code of Ethics and Conduct.

(l)         After three years of Associate Membership, an Associate Member is eligible to apply to present a case for full membership of NSWIPP.  Criteria to support this application shall include:

  1. Significant involvement in the life of the Institute while an Associate Member.
  2. A documented resume of relevant psychoanalytic continuing education carried out during that time.
